Another Installment of Great Baseball Names of the 80's

Haunting Bill Buckner to this day

Today we salute Mookie Wilson, New York Mets outfielder from 1980 to 1989. Wilson, ne William Haywood, is perhaps best remembered for his pivotal Game 6 at-bat in the 1986 World Series. His later years would find him locked in a blood feud with Mookie Blaylock over who was the original Mookie.

A year ago this post would have made me want to cry. No longer! I'm cured! It's amazing what a World Series victory can do...

I remember visiting the beautiful and historic Shea Stadium in the formative years of my early childhood, and I remember they way all the Mets fans would cheer "Mooooooooooookie", and I remember wondering why are they all booing Mookie; for a short time he held the title of MLB Active Player with the Coolest Name (later to be dethroned by Mariano Duncan. It may not seem like that cool a name, but just say it out loud.) As I'm writing this, I'm wondering: who is the reigning all time champ of Baseball Player with the Coolest Name? Some nominees:
Babe Ruth
Raul Mondesi
Dizzy Dean
Jason Vanlandingham (earns nomination for having the longest last name in MLB history)
I'm sure there are others, but I'm tired of thinking about this.

Wow, Vanlandingham beats Jason Isringhausen by a consonant.
